Their trees produce Golden Delicious and Rome apples. If you look hard, you may find a couple of Granny Smith trees. Several of the farms have apple-picking while others have hayrides, pony rides, gold panning or other family activities.
They are open six days a week, 9-5, closed on Saturdays. Visit the Apple Hill website to read summaries of the farms and plan your trip. Open Sundays beginning late-August until they're gone. More places to check: Smith Family Farms in Brentwood (about 45 minutes from Berkeley) is superfun for kids with wide open spaces and many other activities.

It’s apple season so why not head out to pick your own organic apples?
Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville (a little less than two hours away depending on traffic) has U-pick from August through November for different varietals. They have a little bit of everything, so you may find apples, but also tomatoes.
U-pick is open weekends (Saturday & Sunday 9 am -1pm at this time.
